Two years ago, I started a series of works in search for the emotions of locality. In this period, I made various attempts to investigate my living spaces, and by means of in-depth re-readings, sought to discover a visual language to interpret my aesthetic experiences about the place.
“How’s Taiwan like?” is the first realization in this series. It is composed of several snapshots taken of the cityscape, of images of architectures and their accessories showing what elements strike out as being Taiwanese. The emphasis is on shapes and color patterns as seen in doors, windows, wall tiles, floor terrazzo, etc.
The works “Color Chart” follow “How’s Taiwan like?” to register the characteristics of colors discovered in the earlier works. In ways similar to color collecting, I mixed paints to simulate the local colors of objects as closely as possible, and then applied the mixture onto the canvas. Each painting consists of several colors which come from a single object or site, for instance, a wardrobe, a staircase or a balcony. Each painting is then named after its object.
The study of color charts results in a series of paintings titled “Journey of the Colors”. This series returns to the urban scenes of the streets by compiling various colors in the making of details. Painterly speaking, it refers to flat-styles of the Dunhuang frescoes and early Taiwanese gouache paintings while focusing on color collocation. These freely structured collocations are based upon the color charts and their relationships. (Text by Ariel KUO. Translated by Manray HSU)
