“For the project, Unconscious as we cross participants replicate second hand souvenirs which are bought online. The retrieved souvenirs from my country of birth, are a trace of people’s movement and memory. The objects represent an era juggling tradition, modernisation and colonialism, and are often a celebration of national pride. Participants reproduce the objects, which are then copied again by another person and so on.  Through the gesture of forming, the objects gradually become removed from their original shape and meaning, possibly processing a past while drafting a future.”

Heidi Voet

Heidi Voet’s multidisciplinary practice offers a critical approach on cultural conventions and belief systems, and the ubiquitous experience of time. Her works are infused with a wry humour that plays between material properties of everyday objects and the connotations they carry.

Her work has been exhibited in Wiels Contemporary Art Center, Brussels, The Shanghai Biennale, S.M.A.K., Ghent, The Contemporary Art Center Vilnius, among numerous other venues.
