I have a new band now

I have a new band now
The three of us live in Taipei/Taiwan. We are a Jazz trio with saxophone, bass, drums, -even though we may not exactly sound like a jazz trio. We play the tunes our saxophone player has written a long time ago. On this music we improvise: slow, fast, even, odd, tender, gentle, brutish, violent. We play free within forms, and more often than not a bit louder than other jazz bands.
Klaus Bru, our saxophone player, is originally from Germany. He plays an old silver C-Melody saxophone that he discovered in a pawn shop in San Francisco. Although it’s about twice his age, it turned out to be the perfect instrument to impersonate the sound of an electric guitar on a saxophone.
Bass player Martijn Vanbuel came to Taiwan with a Belgian passport and a strong interest in Chinese culture and music. He usually performs on double bass, but in our new band he plays an orange-red Japanese bass guitar with downtuned strings to enhance its sound and challenge his brain.
Weichung Lin comes from Taipei/Taiwan. He plays drums and a mixed bag of things in our new band. Being the rhythmic heart of about a dozen bands of the Taipei jazz scene, he is very busy re-hearsing, playing concerts, and of course relaxing with his friends afterwards while having a drink or two. The good news is that he still finds time to play with us. We believe that’s because he loves to experiment with new things.
Now, you may ask: How long can a band remain new?Forever plus one day, we’d say, lacking a better answer.
And: Why does a new band play old music?Well, every song has a story, and the stories behind the tunes we play deserve to be remembered in music.
More questions? Such as: Why are there only three musicians in this band? That’s because the number of members shouldn’t go below three, if a band is meant to have it all: Melody, harmony, rhythm. Colors, textures, fragrances. Concert pitch, microtones, air sound. Warmth, depth , per-spective. Passion, thrill, surprise…
We could carry on with these groups of three ad infinitum, you see. But actually, we just want to tell you that all three of us are very happy to be in this new band now.
