Hsieh Mu-Chi’s recent artistic practice explores the possible ways to interpret paintings. The artist juxtaposes external conditions such as the commoditization of the works and the labor in art making into the narrative of his partings, in order to present the position of painting in a globalized society. Nowadays , viewers are more familiar with the images transmitted from the screen instead of those visualized on canvas. Painting seems to be gradually marginalized from the center where it used to be.
However, Hsieh still believes that one should reconsider the position of painting while facing the “invasion’ of the modern technology. Painting should not be limited to a particular use of material in art making. But more like an object waiting to be reconstructed. In his artworks, therefore, the artist further provides a glance which presents the distinctness as a way to overlap and again to separate the subject from the object. Additionally, the distinctness also demonstrates the diversities between the individual and the experience, which thus becomes what the artist has been pursuing and what makes ‘Art’ unique.
