The talk event is to launch the second volume of The Three-Mirror Lens of the Archipelagic Art series: Fiction: Taiwanese Japanese Trainee Solder Chang Cheng-Kuang and I.
Fiction came along with the production process of Kao’s pervious work The Ruin Image Crystal Project, as the artist met the protagonist Chang Cheng-Kuang who lived in a shabby beach hut in Wujie, Yilan. Mr. Chang’s life could be described as a melancholic miniature in the history of modern East Asia development. His sudden death twelve days after Kao’s visit in 2013 left a great impact on Kao. Fiction features two stories about the East Asia: the first one concerns Mr. Chang’s life experience as a Japanese trainee solider in the Kamikaze, in the Okinawa shelter and in Hong Kong, and his escape back to Taiwan and becoming the King of Kumura prawn later. The second account tells about Kao Jun-Honn’s personal field research experiences in the recent years in the form of monologue, addressing his travelogue to Japan, Okinawa, Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as his journey to the Bo-ai Market in Shulin, a ruined place he could never return, a lost memory to his childhood. This book illustrates the ironic stories around the verdict of “death sentence” from the old imperialism, and the “rebirth” of the author permitted by the neo-liberalism in our generation.
